This is Renegade Files Episode 143, The Hidden Power of the Mind: Thomas Troward’s Mental Science.
More than a century ago, British judge and philosopher Thomas Troward set out to understand the relationship between thought, the subconscious mind and the conditions we experience in life. His Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science became one of the foundational works of the New Thought movement and influenced generations of writers exploring the power of the mind.
In RF143, we take Troward’s dense early-twentieth-century ideas and bring them into modern language, focusing on their practical application rather than their religious terminology. We explore conscious and subconscious thought, mental conditioning, concentration, intuition, will, receptivity, the Law of Growth, and Troward’s argument that lasting changes in external conditions begin with changes in the ideas we repeatedly hold within the mind.
This is an exploration of one of the early systems of mental self-mastery, and a practical look at what Troward believed happens when we stop allowing circumstances to direct our thinking and begin deliberately directing the mind itself.
